NC House Candidate Sydney Batch Discusses Cancer Diagnosis

Reaffirms Commitment to Campaign & Ensuring All

North Carolinians Have Access to Affordable Healthcare

Holly Springs, NC – Sydney Batch, the Democratic candidate for the North Carolina House of Representatives in District 37, announced this morning that she has been diagnosed with early, non-invasive breast cancer. The cancer was caught early and Batch will begin treatment immediately. She will remain in the race and will return to the campaign trail in a few weeks.

“While this is a diagnosis no woman wants to receive, I consider myself fortunate. Because of my access to health insurance, I was diagnosed early; I will receive treatment; and I will dance with my sons at their weddings,” Batch said when announcing her diagnosis.

“But I know that there are many women who are not as fortunate as myself. I will be able to take time off work and the campaign trail to recover. But many women would not be able to do so, because they have to work and don’t have medical leave or vacation time. Worse still, others won’t receive treatment at all because they don’t have access to health insurance. And that is the reason I will continue our campaign.”

While the course of treatment will likely keep Batch off much of the campaign trail for several weeks, she expects to return to a full campaign schedule in October.

“I want to thank my husband, my family and friends, and all the breast cancer survivors who have reached out to me and given me the support I need to get through this difficult time. Thank you so much, and I look forward to seeing you back on the campaign trail in October.”

District 37 is comprised of southern Wake County, including parts or all of Apex, Angier, Fuquay-Varina, Holly Springs, and Willow Spring. The seat is currently represented by Linda Hunt Williams, who is retiring effective August 31st.  The election will be held this November.
